National Drug Threat Assessment

The National Drug Threat Assessment (NDTA) is an annual report by the Drug Enforcement Administration providing a comprehensive overview of the drug trade in the United States, as well as foreign drug trafficking organizations. It was originally produced by the National Drug Intelligence Center, but after its closure in 2012, responsibility for preparing the NDTA was assumed by the DEA.

This page also includes the predecessors to the NDTA, namely the Narcotics Intelligence Estimate (NIE) and the National Narcotics Intelligence Consumers Committee Report (NNICCR). Both publications were authored by the National Narcotics Intelligence Consumers Committee.

Among other things, all reports offer the opportunity to compare various aspects of the drug trade across different periods—from methods of drug production and smuggling to government counternarcotics initiatives, which traffickers have always been able to overcome with relative ease.

Please note that the following publications are currently unavailable: NIE 81, NIE 82, NNICCR 88, and NNICCRs 94-98.
