The trial of Joaquín Guzmán Loera at the turn of 2018 and 2019 offered an impressive spectacle. A number of convicted drug lords gathered in a New York courtroom to testify against their former colleague, El Chapo—and through their testimony, they provided the public with a unique look behind the scenes of the Sinaloa Cartel.
Because the witnesses’ primary objective was to secure El Chapo’s conviction and thereby increase their own chances of receiving reduced sentences, their statements cannot be accepted entirely uncritically (at least with regard to the most controversial topics). Overall, however, they revealed many secrets that until then had been known to only a few. They spoke openly about personal relationships among the most notorious Mexican traffickers, shed light on systemic corruption and pervasive violence, and, of course, described in detail the methods of smuggling and the economic aspects of the drug trade. Their testimony therefore contributed not only to Guzmán’s life sentence but also to a partial rewriting of the history of the Sinaloa Cartel.
